Let Your Light Shine
“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
Philippians 2:15 (KJV)
A well-know children’s song goes:
“Jesus bids us shine with a clear, pure light,
Like a little candle shining in the night.”
We travelled in Africa some years ago. Most places there do not have street lights, and at night it is very, very dark. You might drive along the road in the pitch black until you passed a group on the road gathered around a small lantern or candle. It is amazing how bright these lights seem in the pitch dark and how far their light reaches. In the bright of day you would not have seen them at all.
Our Christian example is like that. We may not think that anyone is noticing when we wait patiently in a queue or help that limping pedestrian to cross the road, but like a little candle shining in the night, our influence may be catching. Perhaps our small light ignites theirs and is passed on, multiplying its effect over and over.
Our light comes from God (II Corinthians 4:6), “For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”, and should be shared, not hidden.
Mother Theresa said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”
Prayer
Father of light, shine on and through me. By my example may I brighten this dark world a little bit and be a beacon to lead people toYou.
Amen
