A Time To Laugh
“There is a time for everything and a season, for every activity under heaven…a time to laugh.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4 (NIV)
We need to laugh for our emotional, physical and spiritual health. Solomon knew this and said, “A joyful heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit makes one sick” (Proverbs 17:22). Or in another translation, “Being cheerful keeps you healthy. It is slow death to be gloomy all the time.” Laughter releases tensions and directs our attention away from our problems and is better than taking pills. By making us in His image God gave us the ability to laugh (Psalm 2:4 & 37:13).
It is said that our five senses are incomplete without a sixth — a sense of humour. If we haven’t got a sense of humour we need to develop one because it definitely affects the way we look at life. It can help you overlook difficulties and take some of the stress out of life. Proverbs 15:15 says, “He that is of a merry heart has a continual feast.” So look out for things that are funny and try to find something to laugh about every day.
“Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say, rejoice” (Philippians 4:4). That’s a command. Look for things that bring a smile to your face and make you laugh and share laughter with family and friends.
God does great things for us. He brings good out of tragedy and promises times of grief will end and “our mouths will be filled with laughter” (Psalm 126:2).
“…Happy are you who weep now, for you are going to laugh.” (Luke 6:21 Phillips)
A child said of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have ever laughing life”!
Thank you Father for giving us the gift of laughter. Please help me to see the funny side of life and to share humour with others and keep laughing.
