The Road Ahead
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him”
James 1:12 (NIV)
On a long journey home, the route can be unfamiliar and the weather unpredictable. There may be delays or diversions, and often there is heavy traffic that slows you down. We will all need to take little breaks now and again.
It can seem to take an age, without feeling that we are really getting anywhere-but we persevere because the destination remains the same, the thought of home makes us get back on the road and finish the journey.
Our spiritual walk can feel like a long journey sometimes, the destination can seem far off, and along the way we will face many trials that can slow us down or try to divert us from this path we follow.
As this scripture suggests, it is well worth persevering. Sticking to this path that leads to God and enduring the trials that will inevitably come our way, no matter their strength or duration, will eventually bring us home to God. The crown of life promised by God, the thought of spending all eternity with Him, is a reward greater than any other and that keeps us keeping on, drawing us ever forward towards Him.
The destination is clear and we must stay on track and we must persevere, keeping our eyes fixed on not what is seen, but on what is unseen (II Corinthians 4:18)-the home we are all longing to reach.
On this journey through life, we can take comfort from knowing that God is our guide and navigator and if we follow Him we will not get lost.
Prayer
Father, help us to keep our eyes fixed on you and all that a future with you holds for us. Help us to not let the diversions of this world draw us away from the path we journey on that leads to you. Thank you for being our guide and companion. In Christ’s name we pray,
Amen
