Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

“Give us today our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11

This is a passage from the Lord’s Prayer which Jesus gave when His disciples asked Him how we should pray. Food is important to us both to keep our bodies functioning and to enjoy life.

The Israelites were also concerned about food, as they had left the plenty of Egypt and were travelling in the desert. The story is told in Exodus chapter 16. God sent the people manna, or bread, from heaven on a daily basis. Each person was to gather only enough for himself and his family for that day. If he tried to save some for the next day it rotted, except for that manna saved for the Sabbath day.

In Mathew 6:25 Jesus tells us, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” This is a great comfort in these uncertain times. God is in control and knows we need these things. He feeds all his creation, even small birds, and we are the most valuable of all.

Prayer
Father, thank you for giving us all things to enjoy, especially our daily bread to sustain us. We pray that we would not take this for granted but will always give thanks to you.
Amen
