Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread (II)

“Give us today our daily bread.”
Matthew 6:11

Yesterday we saw that this is a passage from the Lord’s Prayer, which Jesus gave when His disciples asked Him how we should pray. Our first reaction is to see this as referring to physical food which, as we saw, is important to us. But is there more than this?

Jesus certainly realised that physical food can only do so much. We very soon become hungry again and it can’t provide eternal life. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus tells us “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.

In John 6:35 Jesus states that He is the Bread of Life, and with this bread we will not be hungry but will have eternal life. (Verse 40)

Paul tells us that that we are to put off the old man and put on our new self, being like God. Our daily spiritual food is God’s Word which is Jesus Christ. We are to take this real bread and grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (II Peter 3:18).

Prayer
Father thank you for the grace you have shown to us in sending Jesus as our Saviour. Give us the desire to take in this spiritual bread of life on a daily basis and to grow into a closer relationship with Jesus.
Amen
