The Bread Of Life

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life: he who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.'”
John 6:35 (NIV)

Jesus was born in Bethlehem which means ‘house of bread’, and in John 6:35, he says, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to me shall never hunger…” (NKJV) Bread must be eaten to give physical life and Christ must be in us to give us spiritual life.

The theme of bread runs throughout the Bible. Bread was the staple. Even today whether you are rich or poor, you still have bread. It comes in different forms but is available for everyone. So is Jesus. He experienced the whole process of bread-making. Isaiah 53 tells us he grew up as a tender plant, and like wheat he was cut down. He was crushed and beaten like chaff and he went through fire–all this to pay for our sins.

In this country we are well fed, but with the down-turn in the economy, we might start to worry about where our next meal is coming from. As we need physical food to sustain us physically, so we need spiritual food to sustain our spiritual life. But no matter what happens to the economy, God’s bread is always available to us without price (John 6:32, 35 & 51).

Some things are eaten only in season, but bread is eaten daily. It should be the same with Jesus – He can feed our minds every day. “Man does not live by bread only, but man lives by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 8:30 AMP)

God, through Moses, supplied the Israelites with manna in the wilderness to show them their dependence on him, but it didn’t keep them from dying (John 6:56). Bread gives you physical life, but we need more than that. Are we feeding our spiritual lives? If so we will receive eternal life. Jesus says, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever.” (John 6:51

Prayer
Father, thank you so much that you have made spiritual food and eternal life available through the sacrifice of your Son. Please help us not to neglect to feed every day on your Word, the Bible, and grow in our spiritual lives.
Amen
