“See how very much our heavenly Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and we really are.”
1 John 3:1 (NLT)
We are told in 2 Corinthians 6:18 that “I will be a Father unto you and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” God has adopted all believers as His children and Jesus calls them His brothers and sisters. “Whoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother and sister and mother” (Mark 3:35; Matthew 12:50). Your physical family may reject you but you will gain a larger family and this family will last forever (Mark 10:30).
How do we become a child of God? We have to be born again in order to be members of God’s family (1 Peter 1:23). In other words, believe the gospel of Jesus Christ. This belief leads us to repentance and a desire to obey God. This belief and obedience are expressed in baptism which symbolises the death of the old life and announces our re-birth into the family of God. God begins to dwell in us. That means we can now do the work God wants His family to do.
The church is our spiritual family and it will last forever. So how are we to live? We are to love God, and love brothers and sisters (John 15:12, 17). Our love for each other as members of God’s family is a witness to others and it will also keep us united and strong in the family of God.
God has reserved a priceless inheritance for His children. “It is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” How great is that!
We are God’s family. Let’s live like it.
Thank you so much Father, for adopting us into your family. Please help us to be the sons and daughters you want us to be, to do the work you have called us to do.
