Pure Thoughts

“…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable…think about such things!”
Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

Sometime ago I went to the movies to see a film that had promised to be funny and entertaining. Instead it was violent and crude, just awful and I had to leave. As I left I wondered what all those other people in the cinema found so entertaining in such things and whether filling their heads with such negative images and dialogue actually had an effect on them?

What you read, watch and listen to will have some small effect on you, and will leave behind an impression—and those impressions can accumulate in your mind to affect your mood, attitude and outlook on life. Jesus instructs us about this in this passage and tells us to be careful about what we allow our thoughts to dwell on.

Do we want our outlook to be shaped by the things that interest and entertain this world, or do we want it to be shaped by Jesus and the pure and righteous thoughts that flow from him. Let’s think on this scripture and discipline ourselves to think only on these things.

Prayer
Father, we know that all good things come from you and what is not good is not of God—so help us Lord to set our focus on you daily and to fill our days with thoughts of you, Lord.
Amen
