That’s Not Fair!

“He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.  As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”

Psalm 103:10-13 (NIV UK)

A phrase I often hear from my grandsons, “That’s not fair!”, reminds me of Jesus.  He gave up his majesty to be born as a human baby and laid in a manger–that’s not fair!  He was ridiculed and spat upon–that’s not fair!  He was tried unfairly, illegally and with false witnesses–that’s not fair!  He was brutally beaten and then crucified–that’s not fair!  He, who never sinned, bore the sins of all mankind and died for you and me–that’s not fair!  And his response?  “Father, forgive them, for they do not know not what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

On the other hand, we all sin but are mercifully forgiven and offered Eternal Life–that’s not fair!  And what should be our response?  John 14:15: “If you love me you will obey what I command”.  John 13:35: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Prayer

Thank you, Father in Heaven, for your grace, mercy and forgiveness through the sacrifice of your Son.  Help me to respond in a Christian way when life is not fair.

Amen
