Piece By Piece

“Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he sprinkled it against the altar on all sides. They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.”

Leviticus 9:12-13 (NIV)

When I think of giving the Lord my heart, sometimes it sounds too easy, and sometimes I think that we make it easier than it is, as well. We say at times, “Lord I give you my heart”, and at times think that is all that is needed. I want to show you how this verse is a parallel to the repentance God wants for us as well.

Sometimes we can say, Lord I give you my heart, and it’s like just throwing it out there for Him receive. Unfortunately that isn’t how it is meant to be. By doing that, we are being very vague with our repentance and not really turning from one specific act of sin. We can throw a piece of meat on a grill and it takes longer to cook. The same with our sin, we can say I give you my heart, and have it take a while because we don’t know what it is in our heart that is corrupt, so we don’t know what to turn from.

They handed the animal to him piece by piece, including the head, and he burned each part on the altar. I want to focus on the fact that Aaron’s two sons handed the offering to him piece by piece. They didn’t throw the whole animal up there, they gave specific pieces to be placed on the altar. We need to do the same with our sacrifice… our Heart. Instead of saying, “Lord I give you my heart,” give God the specific things in your heart that are causing it to be unholy. “Lord I give you my gossip, I give you the lust in my heart, I give you my doubt”, and once you begin to specifically give those things to Him, He will receive them as your sacrifice. Those things in your life will become ashes at an altar, for the wind of the Spirit to sweep away.

Father, I offer you every bit of my life, one piece at a time.
