Is God Your Friend?

“You are my friends if you do whatever I command you.”

John 15:14 (NKJ)

Many of the men and women in the Bible have enjoyed a close friendship with God.  “God spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.”  (Exodus 33:11) and Abraham in particular was called the friend of God (2 Chronicles 20:7; James 2:23).  God actually said, “Abraham my friend” (Isaiah 41:8, and Christ called His disciples friend in Luke 12:4.

Probably the most well know friendship in the Bible is that of David and Jonathan.  There is also Ruth and Naomi, and in the New Testament the friendship of Jesus with Lazarus, Mary and Martha (John 11:35), and of course with His disciple.

The best friend we can have is Jesus.  You can talk to Him any time, any place and He will never leave you.

Robert Louis Stevenson said, “A friend is a present you give yourself.”  So instead of wishing you could find a friend, seek to become one (Proverbs 18:24).  Ask God to help you, and then take on the challenge of being a true friend.

More than anything we must desire friendship with God.  James 4:8 tells us, “Draw close to God and God will draw close to you.”  That means we must care about the things He cares about.  He cares about people and His friends tell their friends about Him.

Friendship with God is the most important friendship because it will last forever.  What can compare with having the Lord of all creation as a friend?  What kind of friend are you?  The bible tells us “A friend loves at all times”  (Proverbs 17:17).

Are you God’s friend?

Prayer

Father, I want to be your friend.  Please help me to draw close to You, to care about the things you care about, and tell my friends about You.

Amen
