We Thought You’d Just Like To Know

“For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.”

Behind these daily studies is a church, and it would therefore be expected that we would be involved with the relief activities on Haiti. So I thought I’d take a moment to elaborate. And no, you will find no appeal for funds at the end of this study—although if you feel you want to, we wouldn’t stop you.

We have church members in Haiti. You might expect that, given our name. The stories coming from our Haitian members are similar to what you hear on the news. 

As soon as we heard of the earthquake, our relief measures kicked into action. We have a standing fund at our U.S. HQ ready to be wired anywhere in the world to our local representatives. The money we send is available to help right away. It helps those needing immediate relief with food, clean water, clothing, temporary housing, and emergency local church expenses, as well as assisting in repairing local projects like schools, etc. We know where that money is going; none of it is lost in “administration”. 

We are a small organisation with a worldwide network, which allows us to help in a targeted, specific way. Initially, from the UK and Ireland, our contribution was $5,000 to help our members and contacts there. Of course, it is not just our members who are helped. As they are able, our members assist others caught up in the disaster. We just provide the resources to kick-start recovery as quickly as possible. Our local representatives are best placed to know the priorities so as to relieve the situation as quickly as possible.   We did the same for other disasters. The tsunami in East Asia, for example. Hurricane damage in the Caribbean and Americas.

 The New Testament church sent aid in time of distress. For example, in the passage above, believers sent a contribution to help the Jerusalem church at a time of famine. 

In time the relief agencies will move on to other trouble spots, but our people will be still be there, all through that time, best placed to encourage and assist wisely with help long term. And we know our people and we know that we can trust them. We know that every cent and penny will be spent helping. 

I thought you’d just like to know that; with Christians, there’s action behind the words. 

Prayer
Most merciful Father, thank you for the blessings of being able to help those in trouble. We pray for all those affected by the earthquake in Haiti, that you would comfort them and give them hope. In Jesus’ name we pray.
