What Will Happen Tomorrow?

“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”

James 4:14 (NIV)

I was sat playing my piano when there was a sudden great thump on the window behind me. When I went outside I saw that a building 200 yards down the road had blown up. Rubble lay across the road, the building was on fire, other buildings had been damaged in the explosion, cars had been wrecked, and several people were badly injured.

Recently we witnessed the terrible earthquake in Haiti, where thousands of people were killed and even greater poverty and suffering has come upon many more who survived.

It makes me think of the scripture in James where he reminds us that this life is just a temporary mist that is soon over. We are very vulnerable. Any of us could have been walking past the building when it blew up. One minute all is happy—the next can be tragic.

God is the giver of life and he sustains us and guides our steps. All things were created by God through Jesus who also sustains all things. We need to look to Jesus as our Saviour who has a great future for us no matter what happens in this life.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the protection you give to us. Help us not to take this for granted but let us go on to do your work without fear of what may happen to us.

Amen
