Citizens Of Heaven

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 3:20 (NIV)

Some people have dual nationality. They are in possession of two passports, one from their nation of birth and the other from the nation in which they live.

The amazing truth is that we all have dual citizenship. We are citizens of the nation in which we live or the nation of our birth, and spiritually we are also citizens of heaven. The Father has qualified us to be citizens of His glorious kingdom. He accomplished this through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:12-14).

To be a citizen of heaven is an amazing privilege. It means that we have another life, a far more exciting and fulfilling life, which at the present time is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Because of what Jesus accomplished on our behalf, the Father has made us citizens of heaven without us having any say in the matter. That is an incredible blessing as it also includes our families, friends, neighbours, work colleagues and everyone else! All are citizens of heaven. Unfortunately, many do not have this awareness, some deny it and others reject it. Nevertheless, we all are citizens of a glorious and powerful kingdom. “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power” (1 Corinthians 4:20).

To enjoy and participate in the privileges, benefits, blessings and obligations of our citizenship, requires trust and belief in Jesus Christ. We are clearly instructed to “set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:1-2).

Jesus is our passport to the kingdom of heaven.

Prayer

Our Father, thank You for making us citizens of Your kingdom. Help us to fix our eyes and thoughts on Jesus, who made it possible for us to become citizens of heaven.
