Whom Have I In Heaven But You?

“Whom have I in heaven but you?  And earth has nothing I desire besides you.”

Psalm 73:25 (NIV)

The Psalmist was clearly unhappy with how he saw his life and circumstances when he compared them to other people. To him certain people seemed to have a wonderful and prosperous position with no problems. They ignored God and his ways and nothing happened to them.

The Psalmist on the other hand, followed God’s ways, cleansing himself, but still being punished every day. (verse 14). He was envious of others and felt that what he was doing was a waste of time.

Then he realised he was wrong when he looked at what God offers us. The things in the world that we can enjoy are only temporary. They do not lead to eternal satisfaction or salvation. In verse 24 we see God guides us and he will take us into glory in eternal life. All this is possible because of the sacrifice of Jesus who lives for us and in us.

Prayer

Father, thank you for giving us Jesus as our Saviour in whom we have life, and through whom we can look forward to eternal life in glory with you.

Amen
