A Mother’s Advice
“His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever He tells you’”
John 2:5 (NIV)
Mary knew that the birth of her first child was special, unique and miraculous. In Luke 1:35 she was told that her first child would be called the Son of God: “The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.’” As Jesus grew into manhood, His mother witnessed and observed His uniqueness, that He was indeed the very Son of God. So with complete confidence, she instructed the servants attending the wedding at Cana in Galilee, to do whatever Jesus told them to do.
It is advice that we would all do well to heed. Jesus has instructed us to trust Him (John 14:1), to follow Him (John 12:26) and to love each other (John 15:12). What happened when the servants followed Mary’s advice? Jesus’ first recorded miracle – water was transformed into wine! What will happen when we follow Mary’s advice? We too, will be transformed. Read Philippians 3:21: “Who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body.”
A mother’s advice given to servants approximately 2000 years ago is also applicable to God’s servants today!
