The way of the godly leads to life; that path does not lead to death.”
Proverbs 12:28 (NLT)

Jesus became flesh and made his home among us and showed us the way to life (John 1:14).

First of all we have to change the way we think. “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think…” (Romans 12:2).  Proverbs 3:21 & 23 tell us, “…don’t lose sight of common sense and discernment. Hang on to them…. They keep you safe on your way, and your feet will not stumble.”  “Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take,” says Proverbs 3:6.

But our old life won’t give up without a struggle because “the human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked…” (Jeremiah 17:9).  The Bible tells us: “…difficult is the way which leads to life and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:14 NKJV). The Message translation puts it like this: “The way to life—to God—is vigorous and requires total attention.”

Our minds have to be renewed, and to help us to do this God gave us his Word (the Bible): “People do not live by bread alone; rather we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3).  The purpose in life is not health and happiness, but to “…be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you, is holy. For the Scriptures say, ‘You must be holy because I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15-16).

Jesus tells us that “if you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it” (Mark 8:35).  To those who love him and trust him he says, “I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation” (Psalms 91:16).  So, if we are faithful unto death Jesus will give us “a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10) and we will “…live in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalms 23:6).

Thank you, Father, for showing us the right path to life. Please help us always to walk in it and to not go astray.  In Jesus’s name we pray.
