When I Wake Up In The Morning
“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”
Psalm 90:14 (NIV UK)
At our summer camp in Scotland (www.sepuk.org) sometimes the electricity trips first thing in the morning. Maybe it’s the rain, or just an overload, but, whatever it is, it’s inconvenient when it happens. Thankfully we have trustworthy staff members who work to restore the power as quickly as possible.
Occasionally I feel I am not working on full power in the morning. It’s as if one of my body and/or brain switches has tripped and I just can’t seem to get going. An exciting thing about God is that his power and his energy are constant. He doesn’t have power cuts, and he supplies us constantly with his grace.
Moses, the man of God, composed the prayer that is Psalm 90. He discusses God’s timeless quality. “From everlasting to everlasting you are God”, he writes (v2). It is through that perspective we realize how frail we are, and also how dependent we are on the eternal God. “The length of our days is seventy years – or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away” (v10).
If we rely on ourselves, we put our trust on something that is without permanence. It is temporary and may work for a while, but it runs out, and might fail from time to time, just like our electricity does at SEP.
Moses brings his thoughts to a conclusion by praying, “May the favour of the Lord our God rest upon us” (v17).
And, of course, it does. His favour rests on us all our days. Even when we wake up and we trip, and just can’t seem to get going, his favour is there. Each day we wake up to God’s grace and forgiveness.
His unfailing love keeps us going day after day, bringing joy and gladness.
That, says Moses, is something to sing about.
Great God, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Thank you that you are with us continuously and that your unfailing love lifts us up and energizes us all our days. In Jesus name.
