Not My Thing!

“If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways.” Psalm 81:13 (NIV)

Read the small print – don’t be deceived!  Make sure you understand all the terms and conditions!  Everyone is familiar with these warnings.  Is there a warning about not stepping out of our comfort zones?  ‘It’s not my thing.’!  ‘That is not me at all.’  ‘I’m not comfortable with that.’  Yes these phrases exist – they are defence mechanisms, they encircle our comfort zones to shield us from new challenges, new experiences and above all – serving our fellow man.  These phrases are cast iron and difficult to break down.  Why should we wish to see them broken down?

The God of this universe and our Saviour laid no conditions down when he came to this earth to die for us, other than for us to believe in Him.  He offered no excuses to His Father – He did not say ‘this is not my thing.’

On the shores of Galilee Jesus charged Peter and Simon to follow Him.  They were in the midst of their work, struggling to earn a living, however this man simply said ‘Follow me’ and the scriptures say they followed immediately.  Read it in Matthew 4:19-20, “‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him.”  Note He also gave them a task.  Now that would be the ultimate fracture to a comfort zone!  Not only did this man tell them to drop everything and follow Him, He gave them a job to boot!  No pre-conditions, small print or terms of condition – just a command to follow Him and change their work – forever.

As Christians we submit to Him and say ‘not my will but yours’ thus emulating Jesus.  So why when we are asked to serve in a small (or a large) way our defence mechanisms rush to the fore and we hear ourselves saying ‘sorry, it’s not my thing.’  And another opportunity to help shunned.

May God help us to rid our hearts and minds from the excuses that block us from following our Saviour Jesus Christ and doing His work.

Loving Father who gave up so much for all humanity – please help us to forsake our selfish ways by abandoning our excuses and to joyfully serve you in whatever capacity you desire.
