The Truth Will Make You Free
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:32 (NKJV)
I’m sure we have all heard of the Japanese soldier who after World War II continued fighting in the jungle because nobody had told him the war was over. Each twig that broke would get that poor soldier to turn on his heels thinking it was the enemy trying to track him down even though the enemy was long gone.
We are in a similar position to this Japanese soldier. Our sins are forgiven and, in fact, were forgiven before the foundation of the Universe, but until this fact is revealed to us we are still in the dark.
1 Peter 1:20 tells us, “He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you.” And when that knowledge reaches us our lives will change—just like the Japanese soldier’s life would have changed. He would have left the jungle, changed into civilian clothing, got a job, probably found a wife and had children. . He could also enter that same jungle and approach it with a totally different outlook. That snapping twig would no longer be a menacing sound. In short he would have repented of his old way of life.
It’s the same with us—once that knowledge of forgiveness reaches us we become different people. It’s like finding oil in our back garden. It makes you a millionaire overnight—it was always there, and there is nothing that we did to deserve it.
This knowledge makes us free and there is no condemnation for us now or in the future. As we read in John 5:24, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” Through Jesus, there is now no judgment for us, nor at any point in the future.
Thank you, Father, that the knowledge of your plan makes us free. We are also thankful that your forgiveness took place before we were even born. We also realize that we had no say in that contract which was sealed even before the Universe was fashioned.
