Seize The Day

“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Psalm 118:24 (NLT)

A colleague at work was due to retire and about 6 months before his retirement date he set a countdown on his computer: 180 days to go, 179, 178 and so on. We often asked him, ‘how long is it ’till you retire?’ and he’d reply jokingly ‘151 days, not that I’m counting!’

I’m sure that this type of countdown to an exciting event is something we all can relate to. Who hasn’t at one time or another counted down the days to the end of the school year, to a birthday, an upcoming wedding, an important anniversary or to a long awaited holiday?

Having this sort of countdown adds to the excitement and builds the anticipation of the longed for event or occasion. In a way it adds to the value of what we are looking forward to and makes it that more special.

But rather perversely having such a countdown can devalue all the days in between. If day 27 is simply a stepping stone on route to ‘D day’ then that day loses its value and worth.

Every single day is a day God has given to us to enjoy, benefit from, serve others and praise him. Every day is an opportunity to grow closer to God and to develop and nurture our relationships with family and friends. Every day is one that we will never be able to re-capture.

I have known many people who were always intending to go and see someone, write them a note, or give them a phone call, only to find it’s too late because the person had died before they got around to doing anything.

Cherish and appreciate every day God has given, grasp the opportunities each day presents for us and make every day count.

Carpe diem—seize the day!

Prayer
Father, thank you for giving us another day of life. Help us not to waste it but to rejoice and be glad in it, as we use it in your service.
Amen
