Mary, the Mother of Jesus
“The angel said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High…There will be no end to his Kingdom.”
Luke 1:30-33 (WEB)
Recently the Daily Mail on Sunday gave its readers a 2015 Calendar featuring baby Prince George. Everyone loves seeing a little baby, especially a Royal baby, but have you ever wondered how Mary must have felt when the Angel Gabriel spoke to her and said, “Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!…you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call his name Jesus.” (Luke 1:28 &31 NKJV)
When Mary realised that her conception was from God, and not from a mere human, she sang with great elation: “My soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour, for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed” (Luke 1:46-48).
What an awesome blessing and honour it must have been for young Mary to give birth to the Son of God and Saviour of the world! Let us thank God in this New Year for the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus which has made possible our New Birth and life in him.
Thank you Heavenly Father, for your Son whose birth, life, death and resurrection gives us hope in this new year. Help us to live as children of God looking forward to an inheritance of eternal life through Him.
