Fear Not I Will Help You

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)

The chorus of a song written by Southern  Gospel singers, Colbert & Joyce Croft goes, ‘I can’t even walk without you holding my hand.  Down on my knees I learn to stand, ‘cause I can’t even walk without you holding my hand.’  These, I think, are quite thought-provoking words for Christians.

There are many times in a Christian’s life when we can imagine holding on to the hand (or finger, as some toddlers taking their first wobbly steps have to do) of our Lord in our walk through life.  Isaiah 41:13 shows how caring God is, “For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’”

But like babies learning to walk, we still ‘topple over’ and ‘stumble’ one way or another on our ‘spiritual feet’.  That is when we can look to our loving Father in Heaven to grip His hand tighter, because, as the words in the song mentioned above state, ‘On our knees we learn to stand, because we can’t even walk without you holding our hands’  (paraphrased—‘our’/’we’ used instead of ‘I’)

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you so much that you are ‘there for us’ when we stumble and fall and hurt ourselves spiritually (and physically too).  Please guide us back to the knowledge in scripture which will help us with your soothing words, ‘Fear not, I will help you.’
Amen
