Statins and Salvation 

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”
Proverbs 3:5-8 (NIV) 

Over the past few years my doctor has constantly asked me to start taking Statins. Her concern is that as a diabetic I have a greater risk of a heart attack and that taking statins would reduce that risk. My concern is that they don’t cure the problem, they simply control it. As in so many situations in our world today we treat the effect, not the cause. Statins are a small example of that.

So often today our government takes the same approach, treating the effect but not dealing with the cause, and perhaps we are guilty of that in our own lives too. What a contrast to God’s way of doing things! Humanity was cut off from God by our own stupid and sinful way of life. The penalty of sin is death and that is what faces/faced every human being who is alive now, lived in the past or will live in the future.

In some churches the approach is to treat the effect by having a focus on what laws humanity should keep in order to earn salvation. But God treats the cause, not the effect, so he sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect, sinless life and to die on the cross to pay the ultimate penalty for the sins of all humanity. How wonderful that we worship a God who deals with the cause of the problem and not the effect.

For now we have to suffer the effect of sin, of humanity’s self-destructive desires perhaps best illustrated by the consequences of war. There are so many situations where we suffer, both on a personal level and because of the approach of governments of whatever complexion, because we or they won’t deal with the cause of our problems but keep trying to treat the effects.

As the old saying goes, If you keep banging your head against a wall and it hurts, then stop it! 

Prayer
Loving Father, give us the courage to face up to and deal with the causes of our problems, which though painful at the time, is the only way to solve them. Give us the faith, strength and discipline to do so.
