Satan Defeated

“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”
Revelation 12:9 (NKJV)

The Bible reveals the truth about Satan the Devil, and about how he has been defeated by Jesus Christ.

Quite a few sincere Christians do not believe in the existence of the Devil or of the demons.  They confess that the Bible is the authority in their lives but in my experience, having sat with some of them and discussed the subject, they misread the scriptures pertaining to Satan and the demons.

As there seems to be so much confusion about the existence of the Devil, let’s have a look at the scriptures.  The average person on the street thinks of the devil as having two horns and a tail, carrying a pitchfork in his hands and looking evil, but that is not what the Bible says.

Originally, according to Genesis 3, Satan deceived our first parents Adam and Eve. Then, in Revelation 12:9, we find he has deceived the whole world.  Jesus Christ also called him the father of all lies (John 8:44).

Some biblical scholars suggest that Ezekiel 28:12-17 indicates that Satan was created a perfect anointed cherub, full of wisdom and beauty. They also refer to Isaiah 14:12-15 where we find “Lucifer”, the Day Star and the Light Bringer, who disobeyed and was thrown down to the pit (the earth). From these scriptures it may be inferred that Satan was created to bring light to the world, and that instead he chose to rise up in rebellion against his Creator. Satan thus lost a golden opportunity because he chose to exalt himself above God. His heart was lifted up because of his beauty and splendour, and so iniquity was found in him and he became the author of darkness.

Let’s thank God for sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to become one of us and to share in our humanity so that through his death “he might might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14 ESV). We have great victory in Jesus!

Prayer
Creator of all that is good, you are all-powerful and we look to you for knowledge, guidance and protection. Thank you for Jesus, who has defeated Satan for us.
