A Call to Good Works

“And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help people of urgent need, and not be unfruitful”
Titus 3:14 (ESV UK)

When Paul wrote to Titus it was a time of political upheaval.

Titus was on Crete and the people there needed teaching on how to live as Christians in a confused and disjointed society. Paul’s concern was that they lived in a culture of lying and deceit, and therefore believers should remember that they worship “God, who never lies” (1:2).

Paul gives Titus instructions on both how the church should be structured and on how believers should interact with one another and also with those outside of the church. He sees Christians as being “zealous for good works” (2:14), “ready for every good work” (3:1), and showing “perfect courtesy toward all people” (3:2). His thought is that we should not indulge ourselves in pointless controversies and arguments. Instead, those who believed in God should “be careful to devote themselves to good works” (3:8). Such works are the extension of Christ’s grace within the believer. Whatever is next for the Christian involves reaching out and caring for those around us.

Paul ends his letter by reminding Titus once again to instruct the church in good works. Think of those in urgent needs, he says, and let’s not be unfruitful.

Father in heaven, thank you for our calling to your Son, Jesus Christ, and please let his gracious works be expressed in and through us.
