Remembering the Words of Jesus
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you”
John 14:26 (ESV UK)
Nowadays, when a fact or a detail is forgotten, many people search the Internet to find out the information. Sometimes, if a member of my family disagrees with something I say, immediately she or he looks up the Internet to refute what I have said. Storing something in our own brain’s memory banks no longer seems sufficient!
Once Jesus was gone, how were the disciples to remember his words and thoughts without the benefits of modern technology? Jesus anticipated this dilemma and explained to his disciples the conundrum that he had been “with” them and one day would be “in” them. What did he mean? What was he talking about? He was referring to the Holy Spirit. Jesus would continue to be with and in them because of the indwelling of the Spirit, who is the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Spirit would inspire the apostolic writers to record the teachings of Jesus in written form in what we call the New Testament. Not only that but the Spirit would also bring the words of Jesus to remembrance in the lives of believers.
Thankfully we don’t need to rely on computers in order to know what Jesus would have us do. God sent the Spirit of Promise so that the words of Christ could be written down not just on parchments but also on our hearts and minds.
Let the Spirit call to remembrance Christ’s words in all that we do and in all that we say and think.
Prayer
Wonderful Father, thank you for sending the Spirit who calls to remembrance the words of your Son, Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
