Pleasures For Ever

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
Psalm 16:11 (NIVUK)

In our world today, entertainment is big business. Many of the very successful participants in sport are millionaires. Most well known popular musicians are also millionaires. Many live a lifestyle that lesser mortals can only dream about! The reason for this modern phenomenon is that the general public, the masses of humanity, want to be entertained. And as we seek out pleasure, whether it is in sport, music or anything else, we are prepared to give our hard-earned income for it, making the sport and music stars of today very wealthy.

God is not against us being entertained and enjoying sport and music. It is when we put the pursuit of these things before him that we have a serious problem. At the Transfiguration, a voice was heard from the Majestic Glory (2 Peter 1:17) saying, “this is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him” (Matthew 17:5).

Jesus clearly instructs us to seek his kingdom and his righteousness first and everything else will be added in due time. (Matthew 6:33). If we really want the true and lasting pleasures of God as opposed to the temporary and fleeting pleasures of this world, we need to look no further than at God’s right hand.

Prayer
Father in heaven, in your presence there is real joy and happiness. Please enable me to set my affections on the things above where Christ is, seated at your right hand.
Amen
