Spiritual Disciplines

“No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.”
Hebrews 12:11 (NLT)

Just as we need natural disciplines concerning appetites, finances, and so on, we also need spiritual disciplines, such as prayer, Bible study, and confessing and applying God’s Word to our daily lives.

As we discipline ourselves to do these things, they will become habits. Then we will see good results just as we see good results from any other discipline applied over a period of time. Just as physical training is hard and sometimes painful, discipline doesn’t produce immediate joy, but it is an investment that will pay great dividends in due time. Discipline is wisdom because a wise person always does now, what he or she will be satisfied with later in life.

When we discipline ourselves to do what is right we build righteous character into our lives. Our goal of perfection may seem unattainable, but there is no need to fear or be discouraged because Jesus is with us and will lead us through the power of the Holy Spirit. As Galatians 5:22 says “the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” He will give us the strength that we need in order to build spiritual disciplines into our lives preparing us for our eternal future with Him in glory.

Father God, please help us through the Power of the Holy Spirit to discipline ourselves to think and do the things that are right and pleasing to you.
