“Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
Many of us lead busy lives. Life is full – and we all, without fail, run into snags in this busy world. So, when this happens we follow the encouragement of Philippians 4:6 and present our requests to God. Usually we expect an instant change but sometimes it doesn’t come. We wonder why?
Could it be that we are brought up in a culture that we expect – just like instant coffee – in an instant – that our answer will be yes? In this, we forget that our God always gives us grace – unmerited pardon.
The Apostle Paul was afflicted with a problem, which he called “a messenger of Satan.” What he was referring to is lost in history, but Paul knew what to do: “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me” (2 Corinthians 12:8). And God’s answer? “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (verse 9).
God gives us his grace! Which is described as power – power that comes from eternity itself. Or put another way, God is offering us a taste of eternity, through his grace, today! This is a concept that we can’t easily grasp. Yet, God’s ever constant offer of grace is worth far more to us than a world where we always get answers straight away.
Jesus encourages us to pray “your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10). God’s will is that we learn to live in the sufficiency of his grace. It does feel strange that Paul’s suffering helped him to grow in God’s grace. Yet, Paul testified to this – even boasted in this!
God’s grace is something far more permanent than all of the achievements of this age. For it is God offering us eternity itself! And God seeks to establish – and grow – that grace in our lives today.
Please Father, please give us the faith, the resolution that your Son, Jesus, knows us and we are living in his grace. We ask this in Jesus’ precious name.
