An Alternative Rich List
“To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it.”
Deuteronomy 10:14 (NIVUK)
According to the recently published Sunday Times Rich List, a fortune of £100m is now required to make it into a list of the top 1,000 richest men and women in Britain. Apparently the list is made up of mainly self-made men and women who have acquired their wealth through their own efforts, hard work, and ingenuity rather than from any inherited fortune or family connections.
God does not appear on this list despite the fact he owns everything as the above verse shows. Despite his vast wealth, the Bible focuses mainly on the spiritual riches, wealth that God wishes to share with all humanity. These riches are not something that he has accumulated over a period of time but are an expression of his inherent nature and character—of who he is. Although too many to list, given below is a sample of the riches God wishes to share with humanity.
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.” (Ephesians 1:7)
“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” (Ephesians 1:18)
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved.” (Ephesians 2:4-5)
“Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realising that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?” (Romans 2:4)
These riches of redemption, forgiveness, grace, hope and an eternal inheritance, love, mercy, kindness, forbearance, and patience, God makes available and desires to share with everyone. The gospel message is a plea to humanity to accept his free generous offer. In view of God’s generosity he wants Christians to share their riches with others; as the Apostle Paul wrote, they are “to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share.” (1Timothy 6:18)
Father, we thank you that you make available and wish to share both your physical and spiritual riches with all humanity.
