God Is Watching

“The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.’”
Jeremiah 1:12 (NIVUK)

‘From A Distance’ is a very popular song by Bette Midler. Most of us have heard it, maybe on the radio or very likely on Youtube! Youtube is amazing, you can listen to any music that you want. The chorus line is “God is watching us. God is watching us. God is watching us from a distance.”

Is God really watching us from a distance? The Bible tells us that He is a lot closer than the song indicates. “God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us; ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’” (Acts 17:27-28).

God is not watching us from a distance. He sent his one and only Son to be one of us, to share our experiences and through the Holy Spirit to get up very close and personal with each one of us, sacrificing his very life in order to rescue and save us. He loves us too much and therefore will not just watch us from a distance! He desires a personal relationship with every one of us, no one is excluded, all are accepted.

As stated in the anchor scripture, God is watching to see that his word is fulfilled. To see all of his promises are kept. He also watches the whole earth carefully, in order to strengthen those who are devoted to him. (2 Chronicles 16:9) Listening to the song ‘From A Distance,’ many people may think that God is way up there somewhere looking down on hapless humanity as we stumble around in confusion! Thankfully, that is not the God of the Bible, for he cares about us, as we read in 1 Peter 5:6-7, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Prayer
Thank you, Father, that nothing in all creation is hidden from your sight. Please enable us to trust your word as you watch to make certain that all of it is fulfilled.
Amen
