The Truth, the Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

“So then, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in broad daylight, and whatever you have whispered in private in a closed room will be shouted from the housetops.”
Luke 12:3 (GNT)

When I was a child my mother taught me that honesty was the best policy. No doubt your mother taught you that too. Yet we all grew up telling lies. From the tiddlers told by the lowliest in society (“no, darling, your bum doesn’t look big in that at all”), to the whoppers told by the great and the good—we’re all at it. A former cabinet minister vehemently denied that his wife had taken speeding points on his behalf right up to the moment he stood before the judge. The government once told us that one third of all accidents on our roads were caused by speeding when their own figures said it was just 7.3 per cent. The American government denied that they were spying on their own citizens until famous whistle-blower Edward Snowden published documents that proved otherwise.

Proverbs tells us: “When you tell the truth, justice is done, but lies lead to injustice” (Proverbs 12:17). The truth, it seems, is something many people just don’t want us to know. Some politicians even employ people called spin doctors to put a ‘spin’ on events to conceal the truth from us and to show themselves in the best light possible; and some companies employ public relations people who do much the same thing.

Is there anybody who doesn’t lie? Of course there is: God. The Bible says God is not a man, so he does not lie (Numbers 23:18). We can rely on what God says as, unlike us, He is totally honest.

This got me thinking. I wonder if, after Jesus has returned and is ruling as King of kings and Lord of lords, he will write and make public the real history of man’s sorry misrule over the thousands of years that we have walked this earth and decided for ourselves what is good and what is evil. This will be a truthful account of everything that man has done, good, bad and downright evil. We will find out everything: the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth; and everything that those who wanted their lies to be hidden from the rest of us, will be shouted from the rooftops!

Prayer
Father, we pray for all those who hide what’s really going on in this world of ours; those who lie and deceive. Fortunately, we know you know the truth. Still, we pray that they will see the light and cease their lies. We also pray that you will help us always to tell the truth. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
