Peace On Earth?
“I came to send fire on the earth; and how I wish it were already kindled!…Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it you do not discern this time?”
Luke 12:49, 56 (NKJV)
We are living in an age of war and horror. Evil is rampant. Didn’t God promise peace? Didn’t the angels sing of peace in Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”? Jesus replied “No,” in Luke 12:51.
The answer is, “then but not now” (Jesus was the Prince of Peace); and also, “here, but not there.” In Isaiah 9:7 we read a prophecy, “Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” God’s kingdom is on its way with the gift of peace, and here in embryo, but like the Allied invasion of Normandy, it waits its time for the Liberation Day. Meanwhile, those who have faith carry the peace of God within and need fear no evil from those without peace. (Luke 12:4
Father, let your children dwell by still waters. May they never stray from the green pastures and the strong arm of the shepherd. May the light of God’s love keep them always from the darkness. In Christ’s name.
