“And there arose a windstorm, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was now full. And He was in the stern of the boat, asleep on a headrest. And they awakened Him and said to Him, Master, do You not care that we perish? And He awakened and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
Mark 4:37-39 (MKJV)

Jesus did calm the storm, but not until He’d slept through some of it (v 38a). Both points should be reassuring to us. Yes, He did calm the storm—He’s capable of calming any storm, and we need to hold on to that reassuring phrase.

However, His sleeping through the storm is reassuring too!

Babies and small children take their lead from their mother. If something stresses the mother the child also becomes stressed. Make a loud noise near them and watch the reaction of the child, they often immediately look to their mother to see if she’s ok with the noise. If she responds calmly the child is only upset for a very short while. Also if the child falls over he/she often looks to their mother for her reaction. According to her reaction the child either cries while waiting to be picked up or laughs, gets up and continues on its way.

During our storms when we’re afraid and possibly panicking (v 38b) we can quickly look to Jesus, see that He is still there and still calm, so we can settle our fears, knowing He’s able and will calm the storm. He knows how long to leave the storm raging to fulfil its purpose and when to calm it. He is always calmly confident.

Dear Father, thank You for Jesus and His being our Best Friend—always with us, never forsaking us, capable of calming even our biggest storms and quieting our biggest fears. Thank You, in His name.
