Think On These Things~
Whatsover Things Are Of Good Report
The Sixth in a Series on Philippians 4:8
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Philippians 4:8 (KJV)
A few months ago our church assignment was on mastering self and consisted of five “do nots” and one “do” as follows:
Do not complain or moan
Do not boast
Do not gossip or repeat bad information
Do not run others down Do not defend or excuse myself
Do affirm others always
Even writing down the list I found myself mentally complaining on how hard this was going to be – not a great start!
The week went on to prove just how much negativity is in our day to day lives; how easy it is to get swept up in negative conversations; and just how hard it is to be the (sometimes) only voice actually speaking out positively. It’s not enough in life just not to say anything negative, we have to actively look for the positive and voice that. We have to look for the good—whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Proverbs 15:30 tells us, “The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat.” We all love to hear of good things said about us whether it’s about our work, the meal we cooked, the cake we baked or a homework assignment. The Message puts it this way “A twinkle in the eye means joy in the heart, and good news makes you feel fit as a fiddle.”
Tell a child that you heard good things about him or her and watch them positively glow. We are all children deep inside and want to hear good things about ourselves so why do we find it hard to say good things about others? “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17) or says it not, as the case may be.
The exercise we were given was for a week, but in reality it is, now that we know, how we are to live out our lives looking for things of good report.
Father, thank You for reminding us of the necessity to pause and meditate. And sometimes it takes that reflection to be able to see the good in others; to be able to see You in them. In Jesus’ name we pray.
