Don’t be Dizzy in Darkness!

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”
John 8:12 (NIV)

I enjoy my houseplants—each have their own individual needs, some need regular watering, a few do not like frequent watering, most need feeding, some like shade and others light.  A favourite of mine, a plant called Oxalis, is a plant that enjoys the light and needs almost daily watering.  Every morning my Oxalis leans over to the window; I turn it round 45 degrees to enable it to grow straight.  The tendrils of the plant seek the light and turn toward it every day.  If I did not turn it round every day the plant would die, as half of it would not receive the light it needs.  In fun I call it my ‘dizzy plant,’ as it is rotated every day.  Because I turn it to the light every day, it thrives.

Like my houseplants, we need the light and water that Christ offers.  If we do not seek it, we will spiritually die.  Darkness destroys.  Similarly if we do not pursue the water of life, we will die! Revelation 21:6 records, “He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.’”

I hope my plant will continue to thrive for some time, but I know that eventually it will give up growing, because that is the inevitable way of all things living – to decay.  However, even though our bodies will decay, who we are will not decay.  We are sustained by the Light of the world and the living water He provides which will ultimately lead to a glorious and wonderful eternal life with Him.

Prayer
Great and wonderful Father, thank you for giving us your precious Son—our Light—and thank you also for His Living water of life.
Amen
