Do You Have Your Father’s Eyes?

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.”
Matthew 6:22-23 (ESV)

When we look at a newborn baby we often say, “Oh, doesn’t he have his mother’s chin, or his father’s eyes.”  Family resemblances are seen by those who know our parents, brothers & sisters, aunts & uncles.

We have a physical family, but we also have a spiritual family.  Can people also see the family resemblances there?  Do we have our brother, Jesus’ ears to hear people’s cries for help?  Do we have our heavenly Father’s eyes that Amy Grant sang of in her song, Father’s Eyes—eyes that find the good in things; eyes full of compassion? 2 Corinthians 1:3 (NIV) calls God the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, and goes on to say in verse 4 “so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

We are the children of God and “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” (1 Corinthians 1:29-30 NIV)  And if Christ dwells in us then, as it says in Matthew 13:16 (NIV), “blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.”

Father in Heaven, may I see with your eyes; eyes of compassion that find the good in things, that lead me to love and help others in need. Amen
