What on Earth is Going On?

“Do not be afraid…”
Luke 2:10 (NKJV)

It was a chilly night, the sheep were settled, the shepherds sat drowsily huddled together to keep warm.  Without warning their world was about to be turned upside down.  Out of the blue an angel of the Lord appeared and nothing was ever the same again for those shepherds.  Terror filled the hearts of the sleepy shepherds—was this a nightmare?  Was the ale they had drunk round the fire spiked?  The angel re-assured them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10).  The message held hope and radical change for all of humanity, but these poor awe-struck shepherds only knew they had to obey the angel’s instructions to visit Bethlehem.  As they went, the heavens burst forth with song.  The shepherds may not have realised the magnitude of what was going on, but they were the first witnesses of God incarnate.  ‘What on earth is going on,’ they asked?

Some time later, King Herod’s court was thrown into chaos when some respected magi from the east questioned him about this new-born King of the Jews (Matthew 2:2). The uncertainty and fear of this query threw all of Jerusalem into a state of anxiety.  Matthew 2:3 tells us, “When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.”  That which they had feared had come upon them!  The sages of the court reminded Herod of the ancient prophecy given in the scriptures by Samuel:  “You, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.” ‘What on earth is going on,’ they asked?

The ancient prophet Isaiah had the answer.  In Isaiah 9:6-7 he foretold the following event: “For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The earth would never be the same again; humanity had a Saviour—hope at last for all.

Lord God, we praise you for your immeasurable mercy in sending your precious Son to an unworthy humanity. Thank you Father.
