Whiter Than Snow

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”
Psalm 51:7 (ESV)

It rarely snows here in Athens, Greece, but we occasionally have a little snow in the winter.  This happens about once a year and the snowfall is very little in the lower areas and sometimes quite heavy in the mountains.  The snow falls and quickly melts as a rule, but when it sticks, even for a short time, it is a wonderful sight to see.

The beauty of it as it falls is mesmerizing, and as it covers the foliage and ground, it creates an image of serenity and makes everything look clean and pure.  Today, this led to my thinking of the verse in Isaiah 1:18, which tells us that God says “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”  Is there anything whiter than snow?  I can’t think of anything else that is that white.

What a wonderful thing to have our sins forgiven and be made pure and white as snow.  Isaiah 61:10 says, “I will rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness.”  We are cleansed by the precious blood of Christ and found righteous in the sight of God because we are covered by Christ’s righteousness just as the snow covers the dirt and weeds and makes the ground appear clean.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for the garments of salvation which make us as white as snow in your sight, covered by Christ’s righteousness.
Amen
