Where Shall I Go?

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.”
Psalm 139:7-8 (NIVUK)

In the vastness, the heights and depths of outer space, there is no place in the universe where God is not present, as the above verses express poetically, God is omnipresent.

But is God always with us in our inner space, in the heights and depths of our mental universe? It is easy to feel and acknowledge that God is with us in the good times but what about times of trial, trouble, anxiety and perhaps depression?

Some have the belief that health, wealth and prosperity are signs of God’s favour and that their absence indicates that there is something lacking in our relationship with God. But the Bible paints a different picture. In our darkest times God has not deserted us, he is still with us to give help and support, as the Psalmist wrote, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.” (Psalm 34:18-19)

With God there is always hope, he is full of compassion and comfort, for God is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4) God cares for us and in some situations all that can be done is to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you”. (1 Peter 5:7)

It is in such times that we are entreated by the writer of the book of Hebrews, in prayer, to “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Prayer
Father, we thank you that we are able to come at any time to your throne of grace and obtain mercy in our hour of need.
