The Beautiful Children of God

“So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months.”
Exodus 2:2 (NKJV)

The Bible tells us that the new-born Moses was a fine child, so much so that his mother decided to hide him in order to keep him out of harm’s way.

Following the refusal of the midwives to obey his order to kill the Hebrew male babies at birth, the Pharaoh told his own people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile” (Exodus 1:22 Septuagint italicized). The Egyptians viewed the Nile as a god, and this would have been like sacrificing their potential enemies to the god so that he would continue to bless the land annually with fertility.

This story brings so many ideas to mind. Satan wanted to devour the child Jesus, perhaps in a similar way to how crocodiles may have devoured some of the Hebrew boys; Herod ordered the slaughter of the innocents in an attempt to preserve his own throne; and the church, like a mother, should provide a safe place for all its children.

More than that, it reminds me of how our loving God looks at you and at me as his precious children, and that he hides us safely with Jesus. “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!” (I John 3:1), and “your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

You and I may be surrounded by problems and dangers, but each of us, just like Moses, is a beautiful child of God, and our present and future life is safe, hidden with Christ Jesus in him.

Prayer
Great loving Father and God, thank you for keeping us safe in you with Christ Jesus, and for your love in calling us your children. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
