When a Man Loves a Woman

“Be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.”
Ephesians 5:21 (NASB)

I recently attended a wedding where the groom’s eyes were full of love and the bride was radiant. At that point it was easy to see that they would do anything for each other. This response should be bottled, harnessed, burned into one’s heart, so that it can be rehearsed throughout the marriage. It is the only response God wants from us.

God led the way on how husbands should love their wives by how He treats us, His church and His bride. He loved us first and the normal response to being loved is to then please the one loving us. That is why so many a starry-eyed bride promises to submit to and honour her husband; and the husband, because of his love, protects and provides for the wife, just like the example Christ set for us. He gave us written instructions: man to love (Ephesians 5:25) and woman to submit (verse 22). Obedience comes with love. God loved us first. He didn’t demand anything from us. He loved us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8 NIV).  And, in fact, the marriage covenant calls on both to yield yourselves to each other, to hold each other in high esteem, giving honour and respect to one another, always giving preference to the welfare of the other. Love and unselfish devotion are the foundation of Christian marriage.*

The song goes “When a man loves a woman…she can do no wrong, turn his back on his best friend if he put her down…” The Bible tells us that because God loves us, He sacrificed His son so that we can truly live (John 10:10).

Prayer
Loving Eternal Father, thank You for giving us daily guidance on loving relationships. Bless those of us who have taken the step of marriage and fill our hearts with your love and example. In Jesus’ name we pray.
