That, Madam, Is Out Of My Remit!

“So be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
Matthew 5:48 (NIV)

I can’t remember what the request was at the time; all I remember was feeling flustered and in need of a helping hand.  The gentleman I asked reminded me in no uncertain terms that my request was not in any way part of his remit.  I am grateful to him, however, as his terminology made me consider my remit as a Christian.

Jesus gave clear instructions as to the remit of one of His followers.  In Matthew 5:40 he tells us, “If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat as well.” The spirit of what He was saying is exemplified further in the Sermon on the Mount, in verse 41, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” It is a tough ‘remit’ to love your enemies (verse 44), but think about it—our adversary, the evil one, cannot deal with love—it confuses him, he is powerless to deal with love.  Love is of God and therefore not of this world.  So when someone refuses to help you when you ask, smile and thank them anyway—because that is our remit!

Prayer
Loving Father, we thank you for calling us out of the darkness of a world that no longer cares for individuals.  Holy Spirit enable us to follow Christ’s perfect example and love where there is no love.
Amen
