Get Lost!

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?”
Matthew 16:25-26 (NKJV)

From my seat the clouds look like a sea of foam (gently undulating). As I sat back and drank this in, I found myself thinking about how God views this beautiful sight and more; how He, as it were, is able to zoom in below, right into our hearts. Then I found my mind singing a song from a British Christian group called Re:mission
May I lose myself in You
May the earth beneath my feet
Bear the essence of Your peace.
In Your presence may I roam
In the chambers of Your heart,
May I wander ‘til I’m lost in Your love.

In today’s world we seldom wander. Run here, dash there—always behind schedule or just running to a tight deadline. Worried about this, anxious about that. Yet never quite attaining fulfillment or that feeling of accomplishment. Luke 12:25 (NIV) points out, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?” and verse 26 goes on to say, “Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”

Sometimes, to find ourselves we have to lose ourselves. Give the reins over to God, let God take control, let Him be our Rock (Psalm 18:31), and take care of things. And as we lose control we also lose the stresses and anxieties, making room to feel the peace of God which Christ promised us in John 14:27. The Message Bible puts it this way: “…I’m leaving you well and whole. That’s my parting gift to you. Peace. I don’t leave you the way you’re used to being left—feeling abandoned, bereft. So don’t be upset. Don’t be distraught.

Another of Re:mission’s songs starts contemplatively:
I can feel Your love
I can see You now,
Blessing me.

We can get bogged down in life, buried in the detail and as a result we can get stressed out. Take courage from 2 Chronicles 20:17 (MSG): “You won’t have to lift a hand in this battle; just stand firm, Judah and Jerusalem, and watch God’s saving work for you take shape. Don’t be afraid, don’t waver. March out boldly tomorrow—God is with you.” Rather than running around trying to gain control of every last detail of our lives, managing only to lose sight of how blessed we actually are, let’s rather get lost in the detail of God’s love.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the Comforter you left us with. Help us to remember that we are neither alone nor need to live this life alone – You are always with us. In Jesus’ name we pray.
