Be Still

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God;’”
Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Yesterday was to have been an important day for me, a significant one, definitely life changing. I’d been working towards it steadily, measuredly, for months, all to culminate in yesterday. But yesterday came and went. I could not take the next step because not all parties had completed their segments and so things could not progress; worse still the deadline has not been reset, but just left open!

It’s interesting how much control I want over my life, when God wants us to relinquish our lives to Him. When the Israelites were in trouble in the Wilderness Moses told them, “Don’t be afraid. Stand firm and watch God do his work of salvation for you today…” (Exodus 14:13 (MSG). The KJV says “Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day:” and the NIV puts it this way: “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.” The header scripture tells us to be still and know that He is God, and goes on to say that God will be exalted among the nations and in the earth.

Did we notice in the Psalm that it talks about God being exalted? Could it be sometimes the exaltation of self which make us so anxious and impatient? We are reminded in Ecclesiastes 3:1 that, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”

So, whether we stand firm, stand still, or just be still, let the honour and glory go to God.

Loving Eternal Father, thank You for reminding us that we sometimes need to just be still and know that You are God. In Jesus’ name we pray.
