Fragrance Makes All the Difference!
“Perfume and fragrant oils make you feel happier, but trouble shatters your peace of mind.”
Proverbs 27:9 (GNT)
I read an article recently about the perfume industry and discovered that the most expensive fragrance in the world is called Jasmine and produced by Grasse on the French Riviera—one of its core ingredients is priced at £56,000 a kilo! Wow! That’s unbelievable, but of course fragrance is big business and just about every celebrity today has come up with their own brand of perfume or aftershave. I guess that we all like to smell clean and fresh as we rub shoulders with others socially or at work.
But you know there’s another great fragrance that we can avail ourselves of, which is quite spectacular and very precious, but surprise, surprise—it is free!
So, what is this sweet odour, this fragrance that is so much more precious than any earthly scent? “Thanks be to God who leads us, wherever we are, on Christ’s triumphant way and makes our knowledge of him spread throughout the world like a lovely perfume!” (2 Corinthians 2:14 Phillips). This amazing odour or fragrance, or lovely perfume, is the knowledge of Jesus Christ. This knowledge of his life, death, resurrection and ascension and what he has “bought” for mankind with his blood is a sweet smell as it is disseminated by Christians around the globe. Paul goes on to say, “We Christians have the unmistakable ‘scent’ of Christ, discernable alike to those who are being saved and to those who are heading for death. To the latter it seems like the deathly smell of doom, to the former it has the refreshing fragrance of life itself” (Verses 15-16).
It seems that just like we all have our own favourite perfumes or aftershaves, so we also differ as to what the fragrance of Jesus is all about. To some it is a stench but to others if is the smell of real life!
How about you—have you ever inhaled this special smell and if you have how did you react? Was it pleasing to you—I hope so! Personally, I believe that this fragrance really does make all the difference!
Holy Father, thank you for the privilege of understanding and being able to share this knowledge of Jesus, this priceless perfume, with others. We do of course need your compassion, wisdom and love to diffuse it.
