Opening Ceremonies

“Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, ‘Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.”
Revelation 19:6 (ESVUK)

The 5th August marked the opening of two famous events: the Olympics, this year being held in Rio de Janeiro, and the internationally acclaimed Edinburgh Festival.

With the Olympics, host countries often compete with one another to present the most memorable opening ceremony. Singers, dancers, marching bands, actors, and well-known celebrities perform for the cheering crowds, and firework displays dazzle them. There is much celebration.

Beginnings are also important in the Bible, which is a collection of 66 books. In fact, its opening book is called Genesis, meaning “beginnings”. When the earth was created, it’s written that the angels sang with joy.

When a new chapter for humanity began with the birth of Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, it was a time of jubilation, and there was a sound and light display of harmonious, heavenly choirs and of a bright star sparkling in the night sky.

The Bible tells us of another opening ceremony that will occur in everyone’s future. It’s to do with the fantastic return of Jesus Christ when he ushers in a new and everlasting age of peace and happiness. The last book in the Bible, called Revelation, reveals what it will be like, using terms that we can understand. An heraldic trumpet will sound, and wonderful voices shall announce that Jesus shall reign forever and ever. There shall be singing, dancing, and smiling – a time to celebrate.

As we witness the opening of the Olympics, let’s remember that there’s a much grander and better beginning ahead for the whole world when Jesus returns. The Christian’s prayer is that God would speed that day.

Let every day be a new beginning in our Christian lives, Father in Heaven, until that great day of Christ’s return, a new beginning which will bring great celebration.
