Living Christianity

“You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.”
Acts 2:28 (NKJV)

We have just returned from our Church sponsored annual Summer Camp for teens on the banks of Loch Lomond in Scotland. This camp is staffed by Christian volunteers who believe the saying by William Arthur Ward:
“The mediocre teacher tells,
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.”

SEP is a tented camp set in a beautiful location surrounded by lake and hills that inspire you to worship God by the beauty of creation around you. But…when it rains it can be cold and muddy and then the midges come out (tiny mosquitoes-like insects with a powerful bite!). It’s not quite so easy to praise God then, but as Henry Ward Beecher said, “If a man cannot be a Christian in the place where he is, he cannot be a Christian anywhere!” Helen Keller, blind and deaf, said “We could never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world.”

SEP hopes to show young people that Christianity can be fun and leads to joy and healthy relationships. I heard a saying recently that for Christians, joy is the flag that flies above the castle of their hearts, announcing that the King is in residence! We demonstrate that “Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves!” (J. M. Barrie)

By living Christianity in a field in Scotland we can model how to turn problems into possibilities, demonstrate that however good or bad your situation is, it will change, and help others to take the first step to new life. As C. S. Lewis said, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

Creator God, you are an awesome God of love. Thank you so much for an opportunity to see Christianity in action in a beautiful setting that inspires worship. May our lives be lived in worship all through the year.
