Men and Women
“So God created human beings in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:26 (NLT)
From this verse we can see the equality of men and women and that, since God made them both in his image, there must be something in God himself that is feminine as well as masculine. For example, God tells us, “I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child” (Isaiah 66:13). And again, “You neglected the Rock who had fathered you; you forgot the God who had given you birth” (Deuteronomy 32:18). God was our father and mother.
So from the beginning men and women were equally created in God’s image and given dominion over the earth and everything on it. It tells us in Genesis 2:18 that, “It is not good for man to be alone.” And so woman was made as a companion and fellow worker, with one of her functions being that she gave birth. But then Peter tells husbands that “she may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life” (1 Peter 3:7).
We are both called to serve but, because we are different, we require each other in different ways. Wives are told to submit to their husbands because the marriage relationship is supposed to reflect the relationship between Christ and the church; and women need men to help and support them as Christ helps and supports the church.
But we are “all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus…there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26, 28). In fact, 1 Peter 5:5 says “all of you be submissive to one another.”
We are different, but we are both equal before God, and we need each other.
Thank you, Father, for creating us men and women, and then showing us the way to live together in peace and harmony.
